WildHare Self-Catering cottages are situated 2.5km between the N3 and Lions River Station art gallery - not far from the Nelson Mandela capture site and Piggly Wiggly restaurant. They are on Route 4 of the Midlands Meander, next to farmland. They provide a quiet retreat – a place to relax, read, braai and enjoy the country life.
The town of Howick is 13km South of Wild Hare. Durban is around 100km South on the N3 and Johannesburg is 470km North.
Three of the four cottages are ideal for couples (Aloe, Nguni & Lavender Garden). One has the added feature of wooden stairs leading to a loft bedroom with twin beds, ideal for a family (Bushbuck Blue). All cottages comes with a fridge/freezer, gas hob stove, microwave, kettle, toaster and basic kitchen items. There is no oven apart from the microwave (with so many coffee shops and eating places around you are sure not to miss it). There is a wood burner in the open plan living room and a TV with commercial DSTV(most sports channels, CNN, BBC, and other channels).
The veranda has outdoor furniture and a Weber braai. Cotton sheets and towels are provided. Toilet paper and bin bags.
There are bushbuck, hare and duiker that are easy to spot and a big starry sky on a clear evening. You are welcome to walk around the property but it is advisable to remember to bring tick spray if you are going through the long grass because of the wildlife.
Because of the load shedding, the cottages do have rechargeable LED lamps that can be set to come on when the power goes off and lightbulbs. Solar is being contemplated but is not a reality yet. Our water tank has been mounted on a 9m tank stand and we now have gas hot showers without the need for Eskom to drive the pressure pump.
Cottages are not individually fenced and bushbuck roam wild. If you are prepared to keep your pet on a leash outside or if it is small enough or obedient enough they are welcome. There is a large grassy area for them to run free on during the morning and early afternoon provided they are obedient and come when called.
